3° Day Parco San Silvestro – Campiglia Marittima – Baratti – Populonia
After breakfast in the hotel, departure for the Archaeology-Mineral Park of San Silvestro, behind Campiglia Marittima on the promontory of Piombino. The routes that take you round the whole park are full of museums, mineral tunnels, a medieval town founded by miners and metal casters about a thousand years ago, and tracks of historical, archaeological, geological and naturalistic interest. The tour of the Park also includes a journey to the centre of the earth on a wonderful, mining train through the Lanzi Temperino Tunnel that takes you from where the minerals were dug out to where they were worked. The tour comes to an end at the Museum of Archaeology and Minerals. Lunch in a restaurant in Campiglia Marittima or Baratti. In the afternoon a visit to the Archaeology Park of Baratti and Polpulonia, between the hills of the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti. The tour also includes a stop at the acropolis in Populonia, and as you walk along the top of the extremely ancient walls you will see unexpected panoramas as well as what is left of both the first Etruscan village and that of several monumental temples dating back to the days of Roman Populonia. Once the visit to the archaeology site is over, your journey in time takes you to the old part of Populonia, where its small, medieval castle with its characteristic shops makes you feel as though time has stopped. Return to hotel for evening meal and accommodation.
